Tainted Aether question | 7/22/2021 10:09:50 PM |
Okay, so I have Tainted Aether, Varchild's War-riders and Illness in the Ranks in play. The war riders pump in tokens for my opponent, illness in the ranks causes them to die right way and the aether forces your opponent to sacrifice a creature or land. My question is, can your opponents sac the tokens to the war-riders or since they die right away is that not an option and they are forced to sac something else?? I would appreciate someone who runs this site to give an official ruling on this combo (if possible) rather than others speculation on it. I don't want to spend the money building this deck only to find out that it's not valid. Thanks all.

Tainted Aether Buy Varchild's War-Riders Buy Illness in the Ranks Buy Assuming no other relevant effects are involved, this works out favorably for you; that is, your opponent will not be able to sacrifice Survivors to the Aether triggers. Here's how things play out: At the beginning of your upkeep, the cumulative upkeep cost of the War-Riders goes on the stack. It resolves, and your opponent creates, say, three Survivor tokens. Tainted Aether triggers three times (rule 603.2). Once the ability has finished resolving, the active player would receive priority (117.3b). However, just before that, a couple of other things happen first (117.5). First, any applicable state-based actions are performed. That is, all those pesky 0/0 Survivors are put into their controller's graveyard (704.5f), and then the tokens cease to exist (704.5d). After that, the Tainted Aether triggers and any other abilities that have triggered get put on the stack in APNAP order (117.5). Assuming no other SBAs or triggers need to be dealt with, the active player then gains priority (117.3b for real). Assuming no players take any actions, the triggers start resolving (608.1). When a Tainted Aether trigger resolves, the opponent who briefly had those Survivors will choose a creature or land to sacrifice and do so. Then again for each of the other triggers. Note that at the point your opponent chooses what to sacrifice, those Survivors are long gone and won't be potential choices for the Aether. -------------------- Comprehensive Rules --- Gatherer --- Tournament Rules
